Chapter 5: Stride & Struggle

As a passionate dressage rider, my journey has been a rollercoaster of highs and lows, each movement performed, each test ridden, and each practice session, astride my horse has been a testament to perseverance and resilience. While the highs have been exhilarating, it's the lows that have shaped me most profoundly, teaching me invaluable lessons about determination, self-discovery, and the relatively obscure connection between the mind and the horse.

The highs comprise of unforgettable moments, that have been permanently etched into my memory. The moments when my horse and I felt as one, the moments where we achieved pure harmony, the moment after having ridden the best test, the moment after having perfected that one movement, and the blissful and incomparable feeling of standing on that podium. These moments fuel the passion that drives me forward, reminding me why I fell in love with dressage in the first place.

But alongside the highs, there have been lows that tested my resolve. In this demanding sport, setbacks are inevitable. I've experienced the frustration of stalled progress, the disappointment of unmet expectations, and the anxiety of uncertainty, both for  myself and my equine partner. At times, the weight of these challenges felt overwhelming, casting doubt on my abilities and leaving me questioning my commitment to the sport.

During these darker periods, I've learned the importance of self-care and mental resilience. Taking breaks from riding allowed me to recharge and gain perspective, reminding me that my worth as a rider is not defined solely by my performance in the arena. Seeking support from friends, family, and fellow riders helped me navigate through rough patches, offering encouragement and empathy when I needed it most.

Yet, amidst the struggles, there were unexpected moments of growth and insight. Riding became not just a physical pursuit, but a journey of self-discovery and mental fortitude. Through setbacks, I learned patience and perseverance, developing a deeper understanding of myself and my relationship with my horse. I discovered the power of mindfulness in the saddle, learning to quiet the noise of doubt and distraction to find peace in the present moment.

The impact of my journey as a dressage rider extends far beyond the arena. It has taught me resilience in the face of adversity, humility in the pursuit of excellence, and gratitude for the bond between horse and rider. It has shaped my character, instilling in me a sense of determination and grit that extends far beyond the confines of the dressage arena.

As I continue on this journey, I am often reminded that this journey will never be a smooth ride, but with each stride, I begin to recognize the transformative power of perseverance and the strong spirit of the horse and the rider.

And through it all, I am grateful for the highs and lows that have shaped me into the rider – and the person – I am today.

Until next time,

Suhana
